Red Wolf (Canis ruffus) « Thread Started on Jan 27, 2007, 9:05pm »
The red wolf is a reddish or black canid of the south-central United States. It grows to a length of about 105-125 cm, excluding the tail, which is 33-43 cm long, and weighs about 14-37 kg. It is generally smaller then the gray wolf but bigger then a coyote. There has been much discussion and debates on whether the red wolf is actually a true wolf. Many believe that it is the product between wolves and coyotes mating in the wild. Others view them as a totally separate species of wolves that need protection. Regardless of what your views are they are a beautiful animal that might soon go extinct if action is not taken to help their population flourish.
It is an endangered species; the total population in the late 20th century appeared to be fewer than 100. Recently reintroduction programs have begun in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. These programs have begun to help bring back this endangered species to a stable population but have been met with much resistance from local farmers and ranchers. Animals have these advantages over man: they never hear the clock strike, they die without any idea of death, they have no theologians to instruct them, their last moments are not disturbed by unwelcome and unpleasant ceremonies, their funerals cost them nothing, and no one starts lawsuits over their wills. Voltaire (1694 - 1778)
